Ancient Giant Rhinoceros Survived Until 39,000 Years Ago
The massive “Siberian unicorn” – an extinct giant rhinoceros with a single horn up to a meter long – walked the Earth alongside humans much longer than scientists initially thought, according to groundbreaking research published in 2018.
The study, featured in the journal Nature Ecology & Evolution, revealed that this shaggy 3.8-ton creature, scientifically known as Elasmotherium sibiricum, survived in Eastern Europe and western Asia until at least 39,000 years ago. This timeline places it in the same era as Neanderthals and early modern humans, challenging the previous belief that it had disappeared around 200,000 years ago.
Advanced Research Methods Reveal New Timeline
Researchers employed radiocarbon dating and genetic analysis on 23 specimens of the rhinoceros to uncover new details about this mysterious creature’s existence. Their findings significantly revised our understanding of when this prehistoric giant roamed the planet.
The Siberian unicorn’s habitat extended across what is now Russia, with its range reaching into Mongolia, northern China, and Kazakhstan.
Environmental Changes, Not Humans, Led to Extinction
Specialized Diet Proved Fatal
The study’s authors, writing in the Conversation, explained that the Siberian unicorn’s extinction was primarily due to environmental changes that affected its specialized diet of grasses and herbs. Unlike its relatives such as the woolly rhinoceros, which maintained a more diverse plant diet, the Siberian unicorn struggled to adapt when its preferred food sources became scarce.
“Relatives such as the woolly rhino had always eaten a more balanced array of plants, and were much less impacted by a change in habitat,” the researchers noted.

The researchers emphasized that humans were not responsible for the creature’s disappearance. Instead, several factors combined to seal its fate:
- Its restricted geographical range (linked to specialized habitat requirements)
- Low population size
- Slow reproductive rate (common in large mammals)
These characteristics “would have predisposed it to extinction in the face of environmental change,” according to the study.
