Ancient Secrets Revealed in South-Central Poland
In a groundbreaking archaeological discovery, researchers have unearthed Poland’s largest megalithic cemetery near the village of Dębiany. This remarkable find, dating back 5,500 years, offers a fascinating glimpse into the burial practices of our ancient ancestors.
A Chance Discovery
The story begins with a stroke of luck. A team of archaeologists, poring over satellite images, noticed unusual quadrilateral features with surrounding ditches. Intrigued, they conducted a geophysical survey, revealing a hidden megalithic tomb. This initial discovery was just the tip of the iceberg.
Unveiling a Megalithic Complex
As the research team expanded their investigation, they uncovered dozens of graves, with expectations of finding even more. These tombs, unlike most megalithic structures in Poland, are lined with wooden poles rather than stone. Each grave is shaped like an elongated trapezoid, marked by a wooden fence and surrounded by an outer trench stretching between 40 and 50 meters.
Ritual Practices of the Past
Archaeologist Marcin M. Przybyła shared an intriguing detail about the site: “Unfortunately, most of the remains of the deceased and grave goods were removed from these burials while the cemetery was still in use. It was a ritual behaviour that we often encounter in cemeteries from that period.”
A Glimpse into Later History
Adding another layer to this archaeological treasure trove, some tombs are encircled by square defensive structures. Built during the late Bronze Age V, between the 9th and 10th centuries BC, these buildings are believed to have served as a temporary military camp.
