In a remarkable archaeological find, a vast cemetery of Bronze Age burial mounds has been unearthed just 10 miles from the iconic Stonehenge. This discovery offers a fascinating new perspective on Britain’s ancient history and the communities that once thrived in the region.
A Landscape of Ancient Tombs
The newly discovered site, located at Harnham near Salisbury, England, boasts over 20 barrows or round mounds. These structures, dating back 4,400 years, vary in size from 33 to 165 feet in diameter. Arranged in pairs or small clusters, they paint a picture of a complex and organized society that honored its dead with impressive burial rituals.
Unraveling the Mysteries of the Past
As archaeologists from Cotswold Archaeology delve deeper into the site, they’re uncovering a wealth of information about life and death in Bronze Age Britain:
- Ancient Burials: Nine additional burials have been found, some containing clay “beakers” – a hallmark of the Bell Beaker culture that spread across Britain around 2450 B.C.
- Neolithic Connections: One barrow may predate the others, featuring a mass grave with both adult and child remains, hinting at earlier Neolithic origins.
- Prized Possessions: Red deer antlers, highly valued in Neolithic times, were discovered in pits, potentially used for tools and ornaments.
A Site of Continuous Occupation
The cemetery isn’t just a snapshot of Bronze Age life. Evidence suggests the area saw continued use through the ages:
- Iron Age Farming: Over 240 pits and postholes indicate later agricultural activity, offering insights into ancient farming practices.
- Saxon Settlers: Traces of a Saxon building and artifacts reveal the site’s importance well into the early medieval period.
