Uncovering a Trove of Burials in the Nile Delta
In Kom Al-Khelgan, a region of the Daqahliya governorate in the fertile Nile Delta, archaeologists have unearthed a remarkable collection of 110 tombs from diverse eras, spanning the Boto I and II, Naqada III, and the Second Intermediate Period. This significant discovery offers a glimpse into the rich history and burial customs of ancient Egyptian civilizations.
Tombs from the Boto Eras
Among the findings, 68 tombs date back to the Boto I and II eras, revealing rounded and oval-shaped burials containing the skulls and skeletons of the deceased. These remains were carefully laid on their left side, a common practice during that time. Additionally, the excavation uncovered a poignant sight – the burials of newborn children placed inside clay pots.
Naqada III and Second Intermediate Period Tombs
The site also yielded five tombs from the Naqada III era and 37 tombs from the Second Intermediate Period. The latter tombs were rectangular in shape, with depths ranging from 20 to 85 centimeters, reflecting the evolving burial practices of that era. Interestingly, some of these tombs contained clay sarcophagi specifically for young children.
Funerary Artifacts and Treasures
Accompanying the tombs was a wealth of funerary artifacts, providing insights into the rituals and beliefs of these ancient cultures. Among the finds were clay pots – rounded and oval in shape – along with holders, stelae, amulets, and scarabs carved from faience and adorned with intricate motifs characteristic of their respective eras. Stone instruments and flint knives were also uncovered, adding to the archaeological significance of the site.
