In a groundbreaking archaeological discovery, a rare stone sculpture depicting the Mayan god K’awiil has been unearthed during the construction of the Maya Train project in Mexico. K’awiil, a deity associated with strength, abundance, and prosperity, is seldom represented in three-dimensional form. Prior to this discovery, only three such sculptures were known to exist, all located in Tikal, Guatemala. This makes the Mexican find particularly significant, being the first of its kind on Mexican soil.

Other notable finds include an 8,000-year-old human skeleton, a 1,000-year-old Maya canoe, and a previously unknown archaeological site named Paamul II.

A New Home for History
Plans are underway to construct a new museum in Mérida dedicated to showcasing the artifacts discovered during the Maya Train project. Additionally, INAH’s laboratory in Chetumal is analyzing the findings, which are expected to fuel research into Mayan civilizations for decades to come.
