Ancient Treasure Unearthed: 3,600-Year-Old Bronze Minoan Dagger Found in Antalya Underwater Dig

Underwater Excavation Reveals 3,600-Year-Old Bronze Artifact

In a remarkable archaeological find, a bronze dagger dating back to the Minoan civilization has been discovered during an underwater excavation off the coast of Kumluca, Antalya. This 3,600-year-old artifact, adorned with silver rivets, offers a fascinating glimpse into the ancient maritime trade routes of the Mediterranean.

The Excavation: Unveiling Secrets from the Sea

The discovery was made as part of an ongoing underwater excavation project that began in July and August 2019. Led by Associate Professor Dr. Hakan Öniz from Akdeniz University and authorized by Turkey’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the team uncovered a sunken ship at a depth of 50 meters. The vessel, believed to have been sailing through ancient Lycia, was found carrying copper pillow ingots, presumably sourced from the Troodos Mountains.

A Significant Find: More Than Just a Dagger

Culture and Tourism Minister Mehmet Nuri Ersoy highlighted the importance of this discovery, stating, “This wreck may be one of the most important discoveries not only in Turkey but also in the world of underwater archaeology.” The minister shared images of the wreck and the dagger on social media, emphasizing the artifact’s significance in unraveling ancient Mediterranean trade mysteries.

Ongoing Research and Future Prospects

The 2019 excavation focused primarily on in situ documentation, with a limited number of samples collected for further study. Employing cutting-edge technology and modern archaeological methods, researchers aim to minimize errors in their findings. The project is set to continue for the next five years, promising more insights into this crucial piece of maritime history.

This discovery not only sheds light on the extensive trade networks of the Bronze Age but also highlights the potential of underwater archaeology in uncovering the secrets of our ancient past. As research continues, this Minoan dagger stands as a testament to the rich cultural heritage lying beneath the waves of the Mediterranean.
