Archaeologists in Wales have unearthed a fascinating find near a Roman villa – the skeleton of a high-ranking Roman man buried in an unusual manner. This discovery has sparked intrigue and raised numerous questions about Roman burial practices and the individual’s identity.
A Unique Silver Crossbow Brooch
The most striking aspect of this find is the silver crossbow-style brooch found with the skeleton. This artifact, the first of its kind discovered in Wales, signifies the man’s elevated status in either military or civil administration. Crossbow fibulae were worn by officials in the Western and Byzantine Empires from the late 3rd to mid-6th century A.D., serving as powerful symbols of authority.
Mysterious Burial Circumstances
The man was found lying face-down, with large nails placed at the back of his neck, shoulder, and between his feet. This prone position, combined with the presence of nails, suggests he may have been restrained before burial. Adding to the mystery, a nearby grave contained a decapitated individual with their skull placed at their feet.

A Young Life Cut Short
Analysis of the skeleton revealed that the man was between 21 and 25 years old when he died. He suffered from mastoiditis, a bacterial infection that, while treatable today, could have been fatal in Roman times.

Isotope analysis of the man’s bones and teeth suggests he likely grew up in eastern Wales or elsewhere, raising questions about how he ended up on a farm in south Wales.

The circumstances surrounding this elite Roman’s death and burial remain shrouded in mystery. As Mark Collard, managing director of Red River Archaeology, noted, “It is interesting that he was buried prone but still with his ‘regalia.’ Raises more questions than answers!”
