The Endangered Legacy of Adamkayalar: Ancient Reliefs Under Threat

Unearthing the “Men of Rock” in Mersin, Turkey

In the southern province of Mersin, Turkey, an archaeological wonder known as Adamkayalar, or “Men of Rock,” stands as a testament to ancient artistry and cultural significance. These remarkable rock reliefs, carved into the slopes of the Şeytan Deresi Canyon, offer a unique glimpse into the past. However, this priceless heritage now faces an unexpected threat: treasure hunters.

A Rare Archaeological Gem

Adamkayalar is not just any historical site. Its size, craftsmanship, and narrative quality make it a rare find, not only in Turkey but worldwide. The site comprises two main areas:

  1. Rock reliefs in Devil Creek Valley
  2. Remnants of castles, bastions, and settlements in the northeast section

With 19 figures spread across 9 niches, the reliefs depict various scenes, including farewell rituals, feasts, and symbolic representations. These carvings are believed to commemorate the kings and queens of the ancient state of Olba, offering invaluable insights into burial traditions and cultural practices of the time.

A Call for Urgent Protection

Professor Murat Durukan, Chair of the Archaeology Department at Mersin University, emphasizes the site’s importance: “Adamkayalar holds significance on par with the Nemrut and Göbeklitepe regions.” He urgently calls for Adamkayalar to be designated as an archaeological site and for immediate action to protect and develop it.

From Hidden Gem to Tourism Magnet

Located just 60 kilometers west of Mersin city, Adamkayalar has immense potential as a tourist attraction. Durukan suggests implementing security measures, cameras, and lighting systems to transform the site into a unique destination. “If we act without delay, both Mersin and Anatolia could gain a new tourism attraction,” he states.

The Looming Threat

Despite its historical significance and potential, Adamkayalar faces a serious threat from treasure hunters. In 2015, parts of the site were vandalized by individuals searching for non-existent valuables. This misguided pursuit puts the ancient reliefs at risk of irreparable damage or destruction.

Preserving History for Future Generations

The story of Adamkayalar serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges in preserving our global heritage. As these ancient reliefs stand silent witness to centuries of history, their fate now hangs in the balance. The race is on to protect this unique site from those who would destroy it in search of imaginary treasures, ensuring that future generations can marvel at the artistry and cultural legacy of the “Men of Rock.”
