Unearthing History: 17th Century Hussar Armor Discovered in Polish Field

A Metal Detectorist’s Remarkable Find

In a remarkable discovery that bridges the gap between past and present, a Polish metal detectorist has unearthed a partially intact set of 17th-century Hussar armor in a field near the village of MikuĊ‚owice, southeastern Poland. This find offers a tangible connection to one of the most fascinating periods in European military history.

The Discovery

Patryk Chmielewski, a YouTuber known as “Profesor Detektorysta” (Professor Detectorist), made the exciting find while scanning a plowed field with his metal detector. Just two feet beneath the surface, preserved for over three centuries, lay several pieces of metal that would soon be confirmed as Hussar armor.

The Hussar Legacy

The Hussars, light cavalry units renowned for their skill and striking appearance, played a significant role in Polish military history. These “winged horsemen” were known for their:

  • Enormous “wings” worn on their backs or attached to saddles
  • Colorful costumes often adorned with leopard or other animal skins
  • Selection from the wealthiest Polish nobility

Analyzing the Armor

Expert Assessment

Dr. Hab. Marek Florek from the Provincial Office for the Protection of Monuments provided insight into the armor’s composition:

  • Incomplete set, missing the main cuirass (breastplate and backplate)
  • Includes left shoulder pad, both bracers, and a semicircular helmet
  • Lacks decorative elements, suggesting local manufacture

Dating and Significance

Researchers estimate the armor dates to the first half of the 17th century, based on the helmet’s shape. While some corrosion is present, conservation work will provide more accurate dating.

Preserving History

This remarkable find will undergo conservation before finding a new home at the Sandomierz Castle Museum. The discovery not only provides a tangible link to Poland’s rich military heritage but also highlights the potential for amateur enthusiasts to contribute significantly to historical research and preservation.
